When the Meramec comes up
On December 30, 2015, the National Weather Service recorded the Meramec River near Eureka cresting at 46.06 feet. That was a new record, passing the 42.89 feet of December 6, 1982. The same storm put 7.85 inches of rain into the Eureka gauge.
A crest like that pushes groundwater into basements and sewer lines well before water reaches a street. If your home sits low or near the river, test your sump pump now and again when a river warning is issued. Call us the same day if it runs nonstop or does not start.
The city also keeps a floodplain management chapter in its code, so ask before adding a basement fixture in a mapped flood area.
Missouri River water instead of wells
Missouri American Water closed its $28 million purchase of the Eureka water and sewer systems on August 4, 2022. Before that, the supply came from six groundwater wells in the Ozark Aquifer. A roughly 6.3 mile main from Wildwood now brings treated Missouri River water from the utility's Central Plant in Maryland Heights.
The utility publishes 7 to 9 grains per gallon (120 to 150 ppm) for the new supply and says it does not soften water. Scale on heater elements and fixtures is still possible, so a softener or filter question is fair. We cannot know your hardness without a test, so test your tap first.
The disinfectant is now chloramine, which dialysis patients and fish owners must remove. The utility also says customers are responsible for a pressure reducing valve when pressure runs above 80 psi. If your water feels stronger than it used to, we can check it with a gauge.
After a pressure drop or boil advisory
Missouri American Water issued a precautionary boil advisory on April 18, 2024 for part of Eureka north of I-44, caused by low water pressure. Afterward, run cold taps until clear, and call us if a fixture keeps spitting or a heater makes new noises.
What Eureka homes call about first
Our order follows the river, the new water source, and the age of local houses.
- Sump pumps and basement water.
The 2015 record crest is why sump pump repair and battery backup come first. A pump that fails during a storm is an emergency, not a next-week job.
- Pressure and service lines.
A new transmission main and a pressure reducing valve rule make water line repair and pressure checks a real local topic.
- Scale and softeners.
Moving from well water to 7 to 9 grains per gallon changes how a softener should be set. Old settings can be wrong now.
- Water heaters.
Most Eureka houses are 1990 or newer, so a tank heater at the end of its life is more likely than old pipe. We handle replacement on the same visit when we can.
Water in the basement tonight?
Call the 24/7 line, tell us what you see, and we will say what to shut off while a licensed plumber heads your way.
Newer houses, an older downtown, and a lagoon sewer
Census figures compiled by a data aggregator put the median build year near 1999, with only about 12 percent of homes older than 1970. Galvanized supply pipe is unlikely in most Eureka houses. We expect water heaters, toilets, faucets, disposals and ejector pumps instead.
Central Avenue downtown is the older core, and older buildings there are where we would look first for aging drains. Missouri American Water also owns the wastewater side, a three-cell aerated lagoon plant with about 62.5 miles of pipe. A camera inspection shows whether a stoppage is in your line or the utility's main.
Mid America Adventure and commercial calls
Mid America Adventure, formerly Six Flags St. Louis, is at 4900 Six Flags Road in ZIP 63025. Operator Enchanted Parks announced the new name in August 2026. We have no data on how much water the park uses, but any seasonal building with public restrooms needs a known shutoff location before a leak starts.
Businesses along I-44 and Central Avenue reach us the same way. Our commercial plumbing work covers after-hours leaks and drain stoppages.
Permits and licences in Eureka
Plumbing work in Eureka falls under Chapter 16 of the city code, which requires a plumbing permit before anyone repairs or installs a plumbing device. The city's own pages did not confirm which office handles permits today. Ask the City of Eureka Building Department before work starts.
Verify any plumber's licence with St. Louis County's Board of Plumbing Examiners before work starts.
Before we arrive: flood and water-source checks
These four steps fit what Eureka homes tend to face.
Stop the water at the main.
Find the main shutoff and close it if a pipe is spraying or a fixture will not stop. Open one low faucet to drain the lines.
Stay out of basement water.
Standing water near a panel, outlet or appliance can carry current. Leave the area and keep children and pets away until it is safe.
Photograph the waterline.
Take dated photos of the water level, the sump pit and any damaged items. These help when you talk to your insurer later.
Hold off on discolored water.
If taps run brown after flushing or a pressure change, skip the washer and water heater. Run a cold tap until it clears and note the time.
Glencoe, Fenton and nearby towns
Callers in Glencoe and Fenton often ask if we reach them. Glencoe is an unincorporated community off Highway 109 north of Eureka, and Fenton sits across the Meramec valley to the northeast. Give dispatch your address and they will confirm.
Eureka neighbors also live near Ellisville or Ballwin, which have their own pages for local rules and sewer arrangements.
Eureka, MO on the map
Questions we hear in Wildwood, MO
We cover Eureka's main ZIP, 63025, whose USPS preferred city is Eureka. That ZIP includes the Six Flags Road area where Mid America Adventure sits. It also lists Wildwood among its acceptable alternate names.
ZIP 63069 is different. Its preferred city is Pacific, and Eureka is an accepted alias, so mail on the western side toward Pacific can carry either name. USPS confirmation of these lists is open, so give dispatch your street address and we will check.
Yes. Sump failures, bursts and sewer backups get a response from our 24/7 dispatch, including weekends. Call the 24/7 emergency line and say Eureka. Same-day visits are possible when available, and you see a clear price first.
It can. The supply moved from groundwater wells to treated surface water with chloramine. The utility lists 7 to 9 grains per gallon and says pressure may be higher than before. Test your tap for your own number, and read the utility's annual report for updates.
Missouri American Water owns the Eureka wastewater system, so start by asking the utility about the main. A camera inspection shows whether the stoppage sits in your private line or out in the main. Your policy decides what damage coverage includes.
Test your sump pump, move stored items off the floor, and know where your main shutoff is. Never walk into a flooded basement with live power. Call us if the pump runs without stopping, and also call your insurer, since flood coverage is often separate.
Chapter 16 of the city code requires a plumbing permit before anyone repairs or installs a plumbing device. Permit rules vary by job, so ask the City of Eureka Building Department whether yours needs one. We will tell you what we see before work starts.
